What to do if you’re trapped in your car after an accident

Stuck right in the middle of winter weather, drivers should be aware of worst-case scenarios. From putting together an emergency kit to keep in your car, to having a plan in place in case you are in a wreck on a snowy road, we encourage you to think ahead.

Many people rely on anecdotal evidence or common sense to get them through a serious accident. In these situations, though, it’s nice to have tried-and-true tips from the people who make their living on the roads. These tips come directly from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).

As we struggle through the winter driving season, it is likely that you or someone you know will be involved in a car crash during a storm. If your car goes off the road, there are numerous things to keep in mind:

  • Stay in the vehicle. If you leave your car to search for help, you might become disoriented and lose your way back to the vehicle.
  • Hang a bright or reflective cloth from your antenna so other vehicles can see you.
  • Run the engine for about 10 minutes each hour. Only run the heater and dome light when the engine is running.
  • Keep your exhaust pipe clear of blowing snow.
  • If there is more than one person in the car, take turns sleeping.
  • If there is more than one person in the car, huddle together for warmth.

By putting together an emergency pack and keeping these tips in mind, you can remain safe in the event of an accident. If you or a loved one has suffered a serious injury in a vehicle wreck, discuss your situation with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can explain your legal options.
