Bad Wrong-Way Crash Near the Kansas City International Airport
As confirmed in reporting by The Kansas City Star, a wrong-way crash near Kansas City International Airport in the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 18, left one person dead and sent two others to the hospital. Local Police reported that the collision happened around 5:30 a.m. on International Circle. That is just south of the new terminal on 1 Kansas City Boulevard. Investigators believe the driver of a dark gray Honda Fit was traveling in the wrong direction when the vehicle struck a dark gray Subaru. Both Airport police and the Kansas City Police Department’s accident investigation unit responded to the terrible collision. The fatal crash is still under a more comprehensive investigation.
Wrong-Way Collisions are Among the Most Dangerous Types of Accidents
Wrong-way crashes rank among the most violent and deadly events on the roadway. These collisions often occur at full speed because neither driver has time to react. The closing speed multiplies force and produces injuries that are far more severe than in other types of wrecks. Victims face a higher risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord damage, internal bleeding, and fatal outcomes. Even at moderate speeds, the impact can crush the front of the vehicle and trap occupants inside. The victims of a wrong-way crash need immediate medical attention.
The Most Common Reasons Why Wrong-Way Wrecks Happen in Kansas City
Wrong-way collisions are, thankfully, relatively rare. Still, when they do happen, they are disproportionately likely to cause catastrophic harm to victims. Every wrong-way accident requires a thorough investigation to determine exactly what went wrong. The reality is that wrong-way driving can happen for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common examples include:
- Mistakes: Some drivers enter a ramp or access road incorrectly because they misread signs or become confused in an unfamiliar area. In some cases, poorly designed roadways or mismarked signs may actually be the fundamental cause of the crash.Â
- Impairment: Drunk driving and drugged driving play a major role in many cases. Alcohol and drugs can impair judgment and result in drivers going the wrong way or drifting into an oncoming lane of traffic.
- Fatigue/Distraction: Fatigued driving and distracted driving are also big risk factors for wrong-way accidents. Most often, fatigue and distractions are associated with drivers inadvertently crossing the center line into a lane of oncoming traffic.
