The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready for the 2025 NFL season. The first game will be played against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paolo, Brazil as part of the league’s annual South America series. However, the team will be doing so without star wide receiver Rashee Rice. Mr. Rice was suspended six games by the NFL for his role in a terrible car crash in Texas last year. According to a report from KCTV 5, the suspension comes now because the criminal case has been closed. Here, our Kansas City auto accident attorney discusses the matter in more detail.
An Overview of the Rashee Rice Car Accident Case
In March of 2024, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus at approximately 119 mph. According to authorities, he was engaged in a street‐race with another vehicle on Dallas’s North Central Expressway. The highway was busy as it was the middle of the day. Due to the street racing, Mr. Rice and the other driver triggered a six‑vehicle chain‑reaction crash. Thankfully, no person was killed, but several were seriously hurt. There was video evidence showing that Mr. Rice and the other driver fled the scene on foot without checking on the victims.
Rashee Rice was charged with several felonies related to the street racing wreck. Ultimately, he pled guilty in July of 2025 to two third‑degree felony counts: one for “collision involving serious bodily injury” and another for “racing on a highway causing bodily injury.” He was sentenced to 30 days in jail (to be served intermittently) and five years of probation, and ordered to pay over $115,000 in restitution. He has now been suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the 2025 season.
Note: KCTV 5 also reports that Rashee Rice paid approximately $1 million as part of civil lawsuits related to the aggressive driving crash.
Street Racing is Extremely Dangerous
Street racing is extremely dangerous because it combines reckless speed with complete disregard for safety. Drivers often lose control, leaving little time or space to react to obstacles, traffic, or pedestrians. Crashes at high speeds cause devastating injuries and fatalities, not only to the drivers but also to innocent bystanders. Unlike controlled racing environments, public roads are unpredictable and ill-equipped for such behavior. Law enforcement across the country treats street racing as a serious offense, with penalties including fines, license suspension, and even jail. Simply put, street racing is never worth the risk. It is a criminal act in both Missouri and Kansas.
