Multiple People Suffer Serious Injuries in Head-On Collision Near Downtown Kansas City

According to a report from KMBC News 9, several people were hurt in a serious head-on collision on Interstate-70 (I-70) near Downtown Kansas City. A preliminary investigation suggests that driver impairment was a factor in the crash. Here, our Kansas City car accident attorney explains what we know about the crash and highlights the dangers of head-on collisions more broadly.

Serious Head-On Crash Reported Just Outside of Downtown Kansas City

The Kansas City Police Department is investigating a late-night head-on collision on Interstate 70 near downtown. A red Infiniti and a white Ford Explorer were involved, with the latter veering to avoid a semi-truck before crashing into the Infiniti. Both drivers, who were critically injured and reportedly not wearing seatbelts, were taken to a local hospital. The front-seat passenger in the Ford, also not wearing a seatbelt, sustained serious injuries. A second passenger fled the scene. Impairment is suspected as a possible factor in the crash. A more comprehensive investigation is still being conducted by the Kansas City Police Department.

Head-On Collisions are Disproportionately Likely to Cause Catastrophic Harm

Head-on collisions represent an alarming traffic safety issue. When two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, the combined force is equivalent to striking a wall at their combined speeds. Such a tremendous impact can cause catastrophic harm, including severe injuries or fatalities. These collisions are disproportionately devastating compared to other accidents due to the amplified force involved. The sheer magnitude of the crash can also mean that the occupants are more likely to suffer life-altering injuries such as paralysis or traumatic brain injuries (TBIS).

Most Common Causes of Head-On Collisions in Missouri and Kansas

Head-on collisions can be attributed to various factors. While they occur for many different reasons, they tend to share an important commonality: Head-on crashes are largely preventable. They can be avoided with proper care. Some of the most common causes of these collisions include:

  • Distracted Driving: Engaging in activities like texting, eating, or fiddling with the radio can divert a driver’s attention from the road, leading to crossing into oncoming traffic.
  • Impaired Driving: Consuming alcohol or drugs impairs a driver’s ability to make sound judgments and react promptly, increasing the risk of swerving into the opposite lane.
  • Driver Fatigue: Drowsy driving reduces reaction time and awareness, potentially causing a vehicle to drift across the center line.
  • Speeding and Reckless Driving: Excessive speed and aggressive driving make it difficult to maintain control, particularly on curves, which may result in crossing into oncoming traffic.
  • Incorrect Passing: Misjudging distances or ignoring traffic rules while overtaking can result in a head-on collision.
  • Ignoring Traffic Signs: Neglecting to obey traffic signs, such as “Do Not Enter” or “Wrong Way,” can lead drivers to enter a roadway going in the opposite direction.
