Neurology Commission Reports TBIs are a Major Global Health Problem

A new report by the 2022 Lancet Neurology Commission has examined the advantages and obstacles in the prevention, care, and research of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which data shows are a leading cause of injury-associated death and disability. Various world-renowned experts have created a report on TBIs, including a Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Cambridge.

Traumatic Brain Injuries are a Global Health Issue

The report in question examines traumatic brain injuries, which it identifies as a global public health issue impacting 55 million people worldwide and costing more than $400 billion each year. The truth is that a traumatic brain injury is not just an acute condition—rather, it is a chronic illness that carries long-term challenges. These lasting obstacles include an elevated chance of neurodegeneration that can lead to dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.

The Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries

The report states that auto accidents and falls are the primary causes of traumatic brain injuries. In low and middle-income countries, however, road accidents represent three times the number of traumatic brain injuries as falls. In countries with high incomes, falls represent twice the number of TBIs compared to road accidents.

More than 90% of traumatic brain injuries are classified as “mild,” but more than half of patients do not completely recover by six months following an injury. Improving these patients’ outcomes would be a substantial benefit to public health.

Suggestions about How to Better Treat Traumatic Brain Injuries

Medical professionals suggest a multidimensional approach to outcome assessment, which includes an increased focus on a person’s mental health and post-traumatic stress. Studies show that the outcome of traumatic brain injuries is often worse for women than men, but the reason for this difference remains uncertain.

The Cambridge Professor comments that traumatic brain injuries are a substantial global health issue that greatly impacts patients, their loved ones, and society in general. Over the last 10 years, collaborations have offered critical details about improving the community’s understanding of traumatic brain injuries and how to best treat them.

Existing Challenges in Treating Traumatic Brain Injuries

Substantial challenges remain in treating traumatic brain injury, particularly in countries with low to middle incomes. Continued collaboration is necessary to improve the outcome for patients with these injuries and lessen the resulting impact on society.

The report identifies differences in care, including lower treatment intensity for people injured by low-energy mechanisms, inadequacies in access to rehabilitation, and insufficient follow-up care in patients with traumatic brain injuries classified as mild.
