Three Common Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

When an accident victim’s brain tissue is severely harmed due to a car crash or other type of accident, the victim can end up in a coma or other type of unconscious state. The amount of time that a period can lose consciousness can last a short time like hours or a day, but they can also last much longer. If a victim does awaken from the altered state, the person often needs help with movement and cognitive skills. While motor vehicle crashes are the most common type of injury caused by a crash, these injuries can also be caused by various other types of accidents including those involving defective products.

Concussions and traumatic brain injuries are not all the same, and what treatment is necessary greatly depends on the type of head trauma that a person ends up incurring. Some factors that can end up influencing what treatment for a traumatic brain injury include where the injury is located, how the injury was incurred, and the extent of the injury. This article reviews some of the most common types of brain injuries that happen in Missouri and Kansas car crashes.

Concussions

Every concussion is a traumatic brain injury, and those deemed “mild” occur most often. These traumatic brain injuries can result when the head hits another surface, is shaken, or suddenly switches directions in space. These can also occur from very loud noises. Medical professionals rely on medical examinations and imaging to aid in diagnosing head trauma. Some symptoms commonly associated with concussions include difficulty concentrating, headaches, and loss of memory.

Contusions

Contusions involve bruises to the brain tissue, similar to the bruises that happen on a person’s skin. Similar to other bruises, contusions result from breaking and then leaking tiny blood vessels. While contusions are often visible as blue on a skin level due to leaking blood, the injury’s relationship to the brain is mostly associated with issues related to pressure buildup. During accidents that result in brain contusions, a victim’s brain can be damaged below the site of impact, on either side of the impact point, or both. Some contusions can result in altered states, brain swelling, and confusion.

Penetrating Brain Injuries

Penetrating brain injuries happen when an item pokes through a victim’s skull. These injuries can result in the object as well as skin, skull fragments, or other body matter coming into contact with the victim’s brain. This contact can result in serious injuries, particularly if a large portion of a person’s brain is damaged. Penetrating brain injuries can result from items with sufficient external force to break through a person’s skull. In the case of motor vehicle crashes where an object like a piece of glass or other debris breaks a person’s skull and penetrates the area, an individual commonly receives a penetrating brain injury.
