A preliminary investigation by law enforcement determined that the scooter driver failed to stop at a traffic signal. The scooter driver was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Scooters are increasingly popular in our region. There has been a rise in scooter-related accidents and injuries. Unfortunately, scooter drivers—much like motorcyclists—are vulnerable. Too many suffer serious injuries in collisions. Here, our Kansas City scooter accident lawyer highlights four tips that you can use to protect your safety.
Safety Tip #1: Always Wear a Helmet When You Ride a Scooter
You should always wear a properly fitting helmet when riding a scooter in Kansas City. In this way, scooters and mopeds are no different than motorcycles: A helmet is a must. A helmet dramatically reduces the risk of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Regardless of whether you are making a quick trip to a local coffee shop using local roads or you are preparing for a longer trip, it is imperative that you make it a habit to wear a helmet every time you hop on your scooter in Kansas City.
Safety Tip #2: Obey Traffic Regulations (Red Lights, Stop Signs, Speed Limits, etc.)
Kansas City’s roads are shared by vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. As a scooter rider, you are obliged to adhere to the same traffic regulations as everyone else. Doing so is not just the law, it is crucial safety precautions. Among other things, scooter drivers should stop at red lights and stop signs, respect speed limits, and yield to other drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians when required.
Safety Tip #3: Make it a Priority to Be as Visible as Possible
A significant number of scooter accidents happen because the drivers of full-sized automobiles simply fail to see the scooter. With this in mind, it is important that you try to make yourself as visible as possible when you ride. Use reflective clothing or gear—especially during nighttime or in low-light conditions. Beyond that, equipping your scooter with lights or reflective tape can also greatly enhance visibility. The more noticeable you are, the less likely you are to be overlooked.
Safety Tip #4: Seek Immediate Medical Attention for Any Injuries
No matter how minor an injury may seem after an accident, it is vital to seek medical attention immediately. Some injuries, especially internal ones, may not manifest immediate symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent potential complications and ensure a swift recovery.
